Abstract
Population density and the availability of build able land can be the two most important governing factors in determining the growth direction of a city in spatial context. Land with suitable elevation and areas with low population density can be the preferable options for new development.
A city can render better services in the long run for people when it is guided by the right kind of spatial development strategies. Here in this study Geographic Information System (GIS) is deployed in order to derive the best possible choices for the city’s new development areas. The right spatial planning would help Barisal to meet up the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in time.
