Abstract
Advancements in the geo-information technology have contributed to the human life considerably. The technology has been exploited for making human life easier and more secure to a large extent .Geo-information application for managing unavoidable natural disasters, human induced disasters (during conflict) and societal problems/situations are some of such examples. Space technology application, one of the major geo-information components has brought the possibilities of real time mapping of disasters and in-time management. Application of GI technology in Nepal was brought into practice during 1970’s. However, it has been realized that institutional infrastructure is yet to be strengthened to accommodate the technological advancements in this sector. National survey of Nepal is working with collaborative approach with various organizations to utilize the Geo-inforamtion for the developmental activities in Nepal so that the benefits could be maximized for the Nepalese society.
This paper tries to highlight on the state of the art of the Geo-information application in the country, the potential areas for maximizing space benefits for the society, the challenges to cope with its applications and the international co-operation required to enhance the GI programs of the country .Lack of human resources and necessary infrastructures are the main constraints in Nepal for launching Master Development Plan for Reconstruction (MDPR) programs effectively for the post conflict Nepalese society. Regional/international cooperation could support the country in these efforts.
